The Sterling Alaska Railroad Power Cars (steam & HEP) page

Since the Alaska Railroad runs its own passenger service it goes without saying that they supply power and heat to the cars, needed especially in winter months! Not all the F units were steam equipped for passenger use.  Power cars were used so that any locomotive could be used in passenger service. Once the steam equipped F7's began to be retired everything was switched over to HEP
